February 2021 Wrap Up

Hello Everyone!

The last part of February was tough for me because I was finishing up my class for that semester. But I got through that and I just started my new set of classes.

I read 4 books this month and enjoyed all of them. So it was a pretty good reading month for me overall.

With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevedo: This was one of my first audiobooks and I’m blown away. I was afraid that listening to this would take away from my enjoyment of the book since I wasn’t used to audiobooks but I was wrong to worry about that for this book. Elizabeth Acevedo did a wonderful job. It was immediately apparent that Acevedo is a poet because the prose in this book is gorgeous! Emani wants to do what is best for her young daughter while still wanting to experience all of the normal events of a high school senior. Malachai and Emani’s relationship was so wholesome and respectful. This book explores so many difficult topics. The ending was a bit open ended but it made sense to the story to do that. 5/ 5 stars

The Light Fantastic by Terry Pratchett: Rincewind and Twoflower (and the Luggage) continue to travel and get into adventures in this story. Rincewind is the reluctant hero here. I loved seeing Twoflower and Rincewind being foiled with each other but completely trusting each other. I got the point of the incredibly- old hero rushing into marriage with the young girl he saved being a commentary on the ridiculousness of that trope but I still didn’t like reading it. The worldbuilding continued to be interesting in this book. I buddy read this with my brother. 4/ 5 stars

A Girl Like Her by Talia Hibbert: This was my first Talia Hibbert book and I enjoyed it. It was streamy and I was surprised by one of the twists. I did go into this expecting an easy read but this book explored abuse, gaslighting, guilt, a loved one with cancer, and other hard topics. I had to mentally readjust my expectations and then I really enjoyed it. I was rooting for Evan and Ruth to get together. I loved seeing Ruth and Hannah’s sisterly relationship. 4/ 5 stars

Black Sun by Rebecca Roanhorse: I really enjoyed this book. I was invested in all of the point of view characters. I just want Xiala, Serapio, Narranpa, and Okoa (who I hope gets more time in the next book in this series) to be okay and happy. I don’t know if that is going to happen but I want it to. Xiala and Serapio were so interesting together. I can’t wait to see more interactions between Naranpa and Okoa because I think they would be great friends. The politics and worldbuilding in this story was so good and interesting. It always made me want to know more. I felt that the last part of the book didn’t have as much tension as it could have but I still really enjoyed this story. I buddy read this with Jessica @ Jessica Favor 4.5/ 5 stars
